Autoscribe
Price: 1,400 gp
Body Slot: -
Caster Level: 5th
Aura: Faint Transmutation
Activation: Use-activated
Weight: 10 lbs

The autoscribe is a device about the size of a typewriter, with two supports to hold books or scrolls and arms to move paper and flip pages as needed. A reservoir of ink is on the left side, and on the right a glowing crystal which stores life energy.

The autoscribe is a boon to busy wizards and other classes with spellbooks who obtain spells from scrolls and other spellbooks, but have no time to record the spells into their book themselves. The caster places their spellbook in one support, and places another spellbook or up to 10 scrolls in the other support. Setting up the machine takes 1 hour. The autoscribe automatically deciphers the magical writings, but the caster must still succeed on a Spellcraft check (DC 20 + the spell level) for each spell or scroll to be transfered, up to 10 scrolls or 10 spells from a spellbook at one time. As normal, a wizard who has specialized in a school of spells gains a +2 bonus on the Spellcraft check if the new spell is from her specialty school. She cannot, however, learn any spells from her prohibited schools. If the check succeeds, the caster understands the spell and successfully programs it into the autoscribe. A spellbook that was copied from is unharmed, but a spell successfully copied from a magic scroll disappears from the parchment. If the check fails, the caster cannot understand or copy the spell. She cannot attempt to learn or copy that spell again until she gains another rank in Spellcraft. A spell that was being copied from a scroll does not vanish from the scroll. Once set up, the autoscribe will begin to copy spells from the source material to the spellbook. The autoscribe takes 1 hour per spell level to copy a spell, but can work through the night when others are sleeping.

The autoscribe can also be used to create scrolls. You place the source material (typically your spellbook) and set it up as before, with a blank scroll in the receiving end. As normal it takes 1 day per 1000 gp to create the appropriate scroll. Regardless if you are copying spells into your spellbook or making scrolls, you must still expend any gold and xp costs as normal.

Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, Scribe Scroll, amanuensisSpC or arcane mark, read magic, secret page.
Cost to Create: 700 gp, 56 EXP, 1 day.
