"yeah, I have a big bug stuck to my head, and he stores my tools. Also, he won't let go."

Bugs of holding are magical, roach-like creatures with a squishy, wingless, grub-like/caterpillar-like juvenile stage and the supernatural ability to hold objects within a nondimensional pocket space. They come in a variety of colors and builds depending on their natural locale and breed. Males court females in the spring months with soft chirping. Eggs are laid in clusters and placed on the female's back where they harden (preventing her from flying until the young hatch in 1 month), granting her an additional +2 natural armor. Hatchlings, tended by the mother and occasionally the father, grow to the juvenile stage in 3 months, where they remain in that stage for up to 3 years, depending on lunar cycles and food, before molting into adults. A bug of holding has a lifespan of around 8 years (or twice that for familiars and well-cared-for pets). Grown juveniles and adults weigh between 1 and 5 pounds and are about a foot long. Bugs of holding are fastidiously clean omnivores and give off little odor.

Skills & Modifiers[edit]

A bug of holding takes no size penalty for grappling. Larger opponents get no size bonus against it when grappling. It provokes no attack of opportunity for initiating a grapple. It uses its Dexterity modifier for grapple, Climb and Jump checks.

A bug of holding suffers a –8 size penalty to bull rush, overrun and trip special attacks. They gain a +8 size bonus to Hide, a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks (and may "take 10", even when threatened). They gain a +4 racial bonus to Move Silently, Spot, Survival and grapple checks.

Combat[edit]

A bug of holding often stuffs itself with items, and it can't get them out on its own. It attempts to grapple onto an intelligent-enough creature so that it performs this favor, and if everything works out well, get fed and cared for as well.

A burrowing juvenile leaves behind a tiny tunnel.

An adult bug of holding that successfully grapples its target may initiate a cursed clamp.

Cursed Clamp (Su): An adult clamped bug of holding cannot be non-magically removed while alive, and even then, require a casting of break enchantment followed by an opposed grapple check to pull it off. If successfully removed, it can't apply its cursed clamp to the same creature for 24 hours. A clamped bug of holding occupies a magic item body slot (for wherever it happens to clamp down at). If that slot already had a magic item, its effects are nullified (and may be trapped under the bug). If the clamped bug of holding is killed, the magic item body slot is still considered occupied by the curse, requiring a casting of break enchantment to remove it.

Squishy (Ex): Whenever a juvenile bug of holding is dealt physical damage (even if all damage was negated by its damage reduction), it may bounce and twitch into an adjacent empty space as a free action.

Storage (Su): A bug of holding can store up to 100 lbs (or up to 10 cubic feet) within a nondimensional pocket space, much like a bag of holding, though this space can only be accessed by the creature it is clamped onto, and then, as a move action. When killed, any stored items spill out in its space.

Familiars[edit]

Despite being magical beasts, bugs of holding can be selected as familiars. Bugs of holding grant their master as much storage space as a bag of holding type I, do not need to be clamped to their master to retrieve items and do not occupy a magic item body slot on their master when clamped.
