Devourer[edit]

This is my sword, my shield, and my trophy case.

Devourers are kind of disgusting, but D&D has proven itself to be the kind of place where just about anything is tolerated. As long as it makes you strong.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the devourer.

Weapon & Armor Proficiencies: A devourer gains no additional weapon and armor proficiencies.

Ranger Advancement: All devourer levels stack with ranger levels for spellcasting advancement. The favored enemies gained from devourer levels grant favored enemy damage dice for all favored enemies the hunter possesses. Class levels also stack with ranger levels for determining the levels at which the devourer gains advanced and major favored enemy benefits (character levels 8 and 14, respectively).

Waste Not The Flesh (Ex): A devourer has learned to sustain himself on the corpses of his fallen foes. As a full-round action, he may take a chunk out of the remains of a deceased enemy and eat it, and in so doing he heals a number of hit points equal to the CR of the fallen creature multiplied by his Wisdom modifier. This does not affect the creature's remains in any mechanically significant fashion.

Also, if the devoured creature is a favored enemy, he gains an additional buff based on the type of creature consumed, as determined by the list below. The buff lasts for 1 round per CR of the eaten corpse. The devourer may have a number of these temporary buffs concurrently equal to his class level (to a maximum of three). This ability may not be used on the same creature so long as the buff received (if any) is still in effect. As with the ranger, "humanoids" is a blanket term covering both the humanoid and monstrous humanoid types.

  • Aberration: You gain another pair of eyeballs mounted on stalks coming out of your forehead; while you have them, you cannot be blinded, flanked, or surprised. These extra eyes are an alien entity that think indpendently of you, allowing you an extra purely mental standard action during each of your turns.
  • Animal: You may now make a full attack action when you charge. In addition, as a swift action, you can jump up to half your base movement speed.
  • Constructs: You gain Damage Reduction X/-, where X is equal to 2 plus the number of favored enemy types you possess.
  • Dragon: You get huge, draconic wings that allow you to fly at a speed equal to your base speed with clumsy mobility.
  • Elemental: Your attacks become temporarily empowered by an elemental force corresponding to that which you consumed (fire damage for Fire subtype, acid damage for Earth subtype, electric damage for Air subtype, and cold damage for Water subtype). Regardless of what damage type is granted, all attacks deal a bonus 1d6 points of damage of that type.
  • Fey: You create a partially real clone of yourself, which can make attacks as you can. When it does attack successfully, however, it only deals the minimum amount of damage (all damage rolls are treated as results of 1). When this clone is attacked, it disappears for one round and reappears two rounds from when it was destroyed (at the beginning of your turn).
  • Giant: Gain one size category and all benefits and penalties thereof.
  • Humanoids: Gain a bonus [Combat] feat of your choice.
  • Magical Beast: Gain two extra arms, each with claws.
  • Ooze: As a standard action, you may partially regurgitate the devoured ooze, dealing 1d6 points of acid damage per level on a successful ranged touch attack to a single target within Close Range (25 feet + 5 feet/2 levels).
  • Outsider: Gain a bonus [Fiend] feat of your choice.
  • Plant: Successful melee attacks bestow plant spores on the target. A target infested with spores can have their exact location pinpointed by a creature with scent, provided they are within the normal range of the scent.
  • Undead: You become partially made of shadows, gaining the benefits of concealment for the duration of the buff.
  • Vermin: You become surrounded by a swarm of nasty critters, which cover a space equivalent to your melee reach. This swarm follows you and deals 1d4 points of damage per favored enemy you have to any creature inside (except you) at the beginning of each of your turns.

Amongst The Prey (Ex): A 2nd level devourer gains a bite attack that deals damage based on his size (1d6 for a Medium creature). It can be used with a standard action attack or as part of a full attack action with any other weapons you are wielding. This bite automatically gains a flat enhancement bonus equal to one third the devourer's character level. Successfully hitting with this bite automatically confers the effect of Waste Not the Flesh, even if the target is still alive.

Wear Thine Enemy (Ex): At 3rd level, the devourer can replicate the characteristics of a favored enemy he has devoured in the past, up to a number equal to the number of favored enemy types he possesses. As a standard action, he can assume the physical form of one of the creatures whose form he can recall, provided the desired form has a Challenge Rating less than or equal to his character level. This transformation functions identically to the polymorph self spell. If eating a fallen creature to gain a new transformation would cause the devourer to exceed the maximum number of remembered transformations, he must choose to purge one form from his memory.
