In Dungeons & Dragons edition 3.5, classes come in four possible types:

Base Classes Prestige Classes
Classes that you can start your adventures with. Classes for those who have some experience in the world and want something special.
Racial Paragon Classes NPC Classes
Classes for a specific race to be all they can be. Simple but effective classes for the non-player characters of the world.
