Barrel Armor[edit]

It's a large hardwood barrel with a removable lid, with the top and bottom planes knocked off and fitted with suspenders. It is meant to be worn over the chest. A person wearing a barrel runs the risk of looking silly, and the barrel greatly restricts one's mobility and manual dexterity, but there are certainly advantages to wearing a barrel. For one, it's not too hard to slip into a barrel, and the materials are, like, really really cheap. Just get a barrel and some straps. Repairing a broken barrel is pretty much impossible, but usually finding a replacement barrel isn't too much of a hassle.

  1. If the character has some help, cut this time in half. A single character doing nothing else can help one or two adjacent characters. Two characters can't help each other don armor at the same time.

Barrel armor grants its wearer continuous cover (+4 to Armor Class) against projectiles such as arrows, thrown weapons, bolts and bullets. Furthermore, in times of duress, the wearer of a barrel armor may choose to use the barrel to reduce the damage of an attack, fall or other hazard by up to 10 points. Doing this destroys the barrel.

As a move action, the wearer of the barrel armor may go into 'barrel mode', in which he or she retreats into the barrel and and thinks barrel-like thoughts. He becomes, in essence, a barrel and may be mistaken for such. In this state he has total cover against ranged attacks instead, and may hide in plain sight (as a barrel), gains a +8 circumstance bonus to Hide and Disguise checks (to impersonate a barrel) as long as he does not make any movements.

However, should a person wearing barrel armor fall prone on sloping ground, he or she will roll downhill uncontrollably at a rate of 60 ft. per round until the ground levels out. While this is a potential issue, some barrel wearers use this as a means to beat a strategic retreat. While rolling, the barrel-wearer is capable of overrun attacks against creatures up to his or her own size category, or bull rush attacks against larger creatures, provoking no attacks of opportunity. All opposed Strength-based checks while rolling downhill are made with a +4 circumstance bonus.
