Canon:Focused Fire

A party that focuses all its attacks at one creature on the enemy side will see that creature die faster than having each member of the party attack a different creature. This focusing on one creature is called focused fire, and is a powerful tactic in all editions of DnD.
In 4e, the Player's Strategy Guide describes this tactic as a way to end fights with less damage taken.
