Dragondancer[edit]

A mix of physical power and dexterous technique with arcane abilities, the dragondancer brings magical strikes in the form of dragon attacks to tear and destroy its opponents.

Through dance they summon aspects of dragons, in both strength and magic, and use them to hit opponents. They long for the power of dragons and thanks to the imitation of their movements they achieve similar results to those of a sorcerer. Despite this, dragondancers are not born but made through rigorous study and training, such as monks, though a drop of draconic blood helps a long way in the learning of dragondance, as its expression comes more from the strength of conviction rather than peace of the mind.

Making a Dragondancer[edit]

Dragondancers are martial characters at heart, with some additional tools to help in other roles. They excel at melee combat, have some field-control abilities and some ranged options.

Abilities: Beside using Strength, Constitution and some Dexterity, dragondancers appreciate having an high Charisma score.

Races: Almost any race may become a dragondancer, but those that value physical prowess and mental fortitude are more often found among the dragondancers, this includes humans, elves, orcs and their half-breed.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the dragondancer.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Dragondancers are proficient with all simple weapons, throwing axes, light axes, light hammers, kukris, shortswords, flails, scimitars, tridents, falchion, glaives, scythes, longbows, shortbows, dragon claws, two-bladed swords and bolas. They are proficient in the use of light and medium armor and light shields.

Darkvision (Ex): A dragondancer has darkvision out of 30 feet, or it increases its existing darkvision by 10 feet.

Dragondance (Sp): By using secret and complex movements of its body a dragondancer may produce incredible effects. Activating a dragondance is a move action which doesn't provoke. The dragondance state lasts as long as combat does or one minute per class level, if outside of combat. When the effect ends the dragondancer is fatigued for one hour. It can't initiate a dragondance if under any sort of fatigue or exhaustion.

While dragondance is active the dragondancer gains a pool of Dragon Points (DP) equal to its class level + its Charisma modifier (which is also its maximum pool per level). Each round, it can expend one DP per class level as a swift action. A dragondancer may regain some DP during a dragondance by using a move action, which does not provoke, obtaining a number of DP equal to its Charisma modifier.

During the dragondance the dragondancer may expend DP to perform some dancesteps (each costing 1 DP) which create various effects. The dragondancer can use each dragonstep only once per rond. All dragonsteps that produce attacks count as both unarmed strikes and natural weapons for any beneficial purpose (a dragondancer still gains iterative attacks from an high BAB when using them) and, besides exception, they use the unarmed strike's reach. If a dragonsteps requires an attack roll the dragondancer adds the normal modifiers for that attack, but it doesn't add Strength to the damage, and so, no dragonsteps can interact with feats such as Power Attack but they can interact with feat such as Weapon Focus (dragondance). The damage of dragonsteps is specified on the table.

A dragondancer knows all of its dragonsteps:

Dragonbreath: By projecting a dragon's head, as a standard action the dragondancer spews forth a breath of energy, chosen at the moment of use (your choice between acid, cold, electricity and fire). It can either produce a 15 feet cone or 30 feet line. The dragondancer inflicts the selected energy damage equal to your dragondance damage die, with a Reflex save (DC is 10 + half its class level + its Charisma modifier) to halve the damage.

Dragonflight: A dragondancer creates a dragon's wings on its shoulder. Until the start of your next round, the dragondancer adds its Charisma to Balance, Climb, Jump and Tumble checks and gains a +10 feet bonus to its land speed. Starting from level 5, the dragondancer may gain a fly speed equal to its base land speed, and average maneuverability, for one round. Starting from level 10, when outside of combat the flight duration increases to the entirety of the dragondance, while during combat it remains one round. It also increases its maneuverability by one step. Activating these benefits uses the same action used to expend DP. The dragondancer can also consume one DP and use this dragonstep as an immediate action to instantly move half its land speed (or fly speed, if it has the option, such as from level 5 on) in any eligible direction. This movement doesn't provoke.

Dragonhorn: A dragondancer creates a dragon's horn on its head or shoulder and rams the opponent with it. It makes an attack as a standard action or a full attack and inflicts magic piercing damage. It may also use this attack during a charge (this is the only dragonstep that allows this).

Dragonsteps as attacks
Whenever the phrase "It makes an attack as a standard action or a full attack" is used while describing dragonsteps, it means that the dragondancer may use an attack (either a standard action or as part of a full-attack) to use that dragonsteps, which essentially becomes its attack, using its BAB and all the rules for attacking. So, for example, a 6th level dragondancer may use a swift action to spend 1 DP and use its standard action to make an attack with its Dragonmaw dancestep, or it could use a swift action to spend 2 DP and use its full-attack to make three attacks: two at the highest bonus with its Dragonrend and the third with its lowest bonus to attack to use a Dragonsweep, applying the -2 penalty to all attacks due to two-weapon fighting.

Dragonmaw: The dragondancer creates a dragon's head and bite down its opponent. It makes an attack as a standard action or a full attack and inflicts magic bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage.

Dragonrend: The dragondancer creates a dragon's claw made of arcane energy. It makes an attack as a standard action or a full attack and inflicts magic slashing damage. It can fight with two-weapons when using this dragonstep, adding an extra attack, receiving a -2 to all attacks that round.

Dragonroar: Channeling the brutal rage of dragons, the dragondancer unleashes a powerful roar as a standard action. It inflicts your dragondance damage as Sonic damage in a burst of 20 feet (6 meters) centered on it, using d4s instead of d6s. Any damaged creature in the area must make a Fortitude save to avoid being deafened for one minute (DC is 10 + half its class level + its Charisma modifier).

Dragonspear: Creating energy, the dragondancer shapes it and throws it like a spear. It makes a ranged attack as a standard action or as part of a full attack with a range of 40 feet + 10 feet per level, inflicting its dragondance damage. Feats that modify ranged attacks apply to this dragonstep.

Dragonsweep: A dragondancer creates a dragon's tail and slams it against its opponent. It makes an attack as a standard action or a full attack and inflicts magic bludgeoning damage. This attacks targets two adjacent square in an horizontal line within reach, allowing it to use one attack roll against two opponents.

The dragondancer can use multiple dragonsteps in the same round, if it's allowed to spend enough DP and if it has enough actions during the same round.

Improved Unarmed Attack: A dragondancer gains the Improved Unarmed Strike feat for free.

Eyes of Greed (Ex): From level 2, a dragondancer obtains free Appraise ranks equal to its level and may use its Charisma instead of Intelligence on such rolls. It can appraise items in half the time required.

Dragon Secret: Starting at level 3 and at each subsequent odd level, a dragondancer gains a new power in the form of a draconic secret. A dragondancer selects its dragon secrets from the list found on this page: Dragon Secrets.

Draconic Attunement: At level 4th a dragondancer must choose one among these two options:

  • Corporeal Dragon: Your physical dragonsteps attacks and Dragonspear are more solid, allowing you to add your Strength modifier to the damage, and to apply feats such as Power Attack to them.
  • Spiritual Dragon: Your physical dragonsteps attacks and Dragonspear are more ethereal, allowing you to add your Charisma modifier to the attack roll, instead of Strength, and damage, when using them.

Scales: Starting from level 4th, and every four subsequent levels, up to 20th level, a dragondancer gains a natural armor bonus to its AC, equal to the value on the table.

Adamantine Dragon (Ex): From level 6, the dragondancer's physical attacks from dragondance, unarmed strikes and Dragonspear count as made of adamantine for the purpose of interacting with damage reduction.

Mettle (Ex): At 7th level and higher, a dragondancer can resist magical and unusual attacks with great willpower or fortitude. If it makes a successful Will or Fortitude save against an attack that normally would have a lesser effect on a successful save (such as any spell with a saving throw entry of Will half or Fortitude partial), it instead completely negates the effect. An unconscious or sleeping dragondancer does not gain the benefit of Mettle.

Superior Mettle (Ex): At 14th level its Mettle feature improves, allowing it to suffer only the reduced effects on a failed saving throw.

Rising Dragon (Ex): At 18th level and higher, a dragondancer's physical attacks from the dragondance, unarmed strikes and Dragonspear count as being of adamantine and of its alignment for the purpose of interacting with damage reduction. A dragondancer neutral on one or more axis must choose an aligment on each axis to apply this feature (the choice is definitive, unless it changes alignment).

Dance of the Eternal Dragon: By level 20, the dragondancer becomes one with the dragons. It gains the draconic subtype, becomes immune to magical sleep and paralysis, counts as a dragon for interacting with Frightful Presence, gains the Timeless Body feature of a druid, and its dragondance lasts indefinitely, until it falls unconscious.
