Knight of Kabong[edit]

KABOOOOOONG! And there's more Kabongs where that kabong kabonged from
—El Kabong, Anthropomorphic Horse, Ranger, Quick Draw McGraw Cartoon

Sometimes all a musician has on hand has on hand when a fight breaks out is their instrument. The Knight of Kabong knows how to use stringed instruments as effective weapons. Until they can enchant them, instruments are relatively fragile, so it is not unusual for them to shatter on impact, which a Kabongador uses to his advantage. Knights of Kabong are natural showmen, but many prefer to remain anonymous, disguising themselves with the Regalia of Heroic Disguise. Knights of Kabong have been around for hundreds of years, continuing the tradition of the original Kabongador, the legendary hero El Kabong. Inspired by the alter ego of the Hanna-Barbara cartoon character Quick Draw McGraw

Becoming a Knight of Kabong[edit]

Most Knights of Kabong are Bards, but any class can pursue the path of the Kabongador. Charisma is very important since many of their skills are based off of it. Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence are also important.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Kabongador.

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies:Knights of Kabong gain Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Kobonger) which includes the following stringed instruments: Banjolele, Fiddle, Lute, Ukulele, or Mandolin. They gain no new proficiencies with armor or shields

Bardic Music: Knight of Kabong levels stack with bard levels for the purpose of determining the Knight of Kabong’s daily uses of his bardic music abilities (if any) and the value of the bonus granted by inspire courage (if the Knight of Kabong has that bardic music ability). For example, a 10th-level bard/4th-level Knight of Kabong could use bardic music fourteen times per day, and his inspire courage ability would grant a +3 morale bonus on the appropriate rolls. If the Knight of Kabong has no levels in Bard from previous classes, they count as a Bard of the equivalent level as their Knight of Kabong Class Levels, but only for Bardic Music

Dramatic Entrance (Ex): A Knight of Kabong can begin combat with a dramatic entrance. At 1st level, the Knight of Kabong begins combat in the most dramatic way possible. Most often, this Dramatic Entrance involves swinging into combat on a rope and landing with a dramatic flourish. The rope must be attached to something though, so if that is not an option, the Knight of Kabong can leap out from behind a tree, from around a corner, or make their entrance in any other appropriately possible way. If the fight is taking place indoors, then the Knight of Kabong will most likely come crashing through the window or kick open a door. The Dramatic Entrance of the Kabongador gives his allies a +2 Morale Bonus for 1 Round/Class Level

At 3rd level, the Knight of Kabong’s Dramatic Entrance grants his allies a +4 Morale Bonus. Because of the Knight of Kabong’s great heroic reputation, enemy combatants receive a -2 Morale Penalty from the Dramatic Entrance. Both remain in play for 1 Round/Class Level

At 5th level, the Knight of Kabong can swing in on a rope without it being obviously attached to anything. To the casual observer, the rope seems to go on forever before shortening to its normal length upon the Dramatic Entrance’s completion. Allies now gain a +6 Morale Bonus while enemies receive a -4 Morale Penalty for 1 Round/Class Level

Kabonger (Ex): At 1st level, a Knight of Kabong treats his stringed instruments as weapons. The Banjolele and Ukulele act as a Light Mace; the Fiddle and Mandolin act as a Club; and the Lute acts as a Heavy Mace. A Masterwork Kabonger can be enchanted just like any other Masterwork Weapon. All Kabongers can be used with the Weapon Finesse feat if the character has it.

OLÉ! (Sp): At 1st level, a Knight of Kabong gains War Cry (Spell Compendium page 236) as a Spell-like Ability, but must use the specific phrase “OLÉ!” in order for it to work. They can use OLÉ! 1/Day at 1st level and 3/Day at 4th level

Regalia of Heroic Disguise (Ex): At 1st level, the Knight of Kabong obtains the Regalia of Heroic Disguise. In order to gain access the abilities of Knight of Kabong, the character must don the Regalia for the first time upon receiving it. The Regalia is a simple costume, consisting of a wide-brimmed black hat, a black cape, and a black mask that only covers the area around the eyes. They must own the Regalia (which is either given to them by another Knight of Kabong or mysteriously appears when they take the class) in order to become a Knight of Kabong, but do not have to wear it in order to use their abilities. Despite hiding no facial features, this costume is quite good at concealing one’s identity even if you are wearing it over the same clothing or armor you were wearing before you slipped away from the battle. The Regalia of Heroic Disguise grants a +10 Circumstance Bonus to Disguise checks. Unless they make the roll to see through your disguise, even your own party members won’t recognize you unless you reveal your secret to them. This, along with Vanish Mysteriously, does have the unfortunate side effect of your friends believing that you are a coward who runs when things get tough. Many Knights of Kabong prefer to keep their identities a secret, although enough of them fail their Disguise checks enough for some people to recognize them, but they do not acknowledge their true identity even if called out on it. The hat and cape are generic looking enough to be an ordinary hat and traveling cloak to the casual observer, so many wear them on their travels. The mask can be donned as a Swift Action.

Vanish Mysteriously (Ex): At 1st level, when combat breaks out, the character can appear to slip away from the battlefield and reappear as a Knight of Kabong. To so, they roll a Move Silently check as a Swift Action at a +5 Bonus against the Spot Hidden rolls of anybody paying attention to put on their mask. If successful, they appear to the casual observer to have quietly slipped away from the fight, with a Knight of Kabong showing up out of nowhere. Even if they fail to fool their allies, they can still use Dramatic Entrance on any enemies who didn’t notice the change. After combat is over, they can do this again to remove the mask and return as themselves, pretending to have missed all the action. Allies who are not aware of the change treat them with disdain for their perceived cowardice. Allies who are aware usually humor them and pretend to treat them with disdain, since the Knight of Kabong will not admit his secret even if called out on it unless he has purposefully revealed the information to them.

KABOOOOOONG! (Ex): At 2nd level, the Knight of Kabong can unleash a devastating attack. To do so, he declares a Power Attack and shouts KABOOOOOONG!, striking his opponent on the head (not a called shot, just where it usually happens to land). If the strike lands, they deal damage as though they had scored a critical hit with a critical multiplier one higher than normal and the enemy is Dazed for one round. If they actually land a critical hit, the multiplier increases by one more step. The drawback to this ability is that it not kind to your Kabonger. Mundane and Masterwork Kabongers are instantly destroyed, shattering upon impact. Magic Kabongers can survive a number of these equal to their enchantment bonus before suffering the same fate. KABOOOOOONG! is a Full Round Action and has a cool down period of 1d6 Rounds, assuming that they even have a Kabonger to use.

At 4th level, the Kabonger deals damage as though they had scored a critical hit with a critical multiplier two higher than normal and the enemy is Stunned for one round. If they actually land a critical hit, the multiplier increases by one more step. The Knight of Kabong can still choose use the first version of KABOOOOOONG! instead and must declare which version they are using before rolling the attack. Pulling off Improved KABOOOOOONG! takes a lot of effort and energy. When Improved KABOOOOOONG! is used, both KABOOOOOONG! and Improved KABOOOOOONG! have a cool down period of 2d6 Rounds and the Knight of Kabong is Fatigued for a number of rounds equal to the number of points put into the Power Attack. Like KABOOOOOONG!, Improved KABOOOOOONG! is a Full Round Action

Repair Kabonger (Sp): At 2nd level, the Knight of Kabong gains Make Whole as a Spell-like Ability for the purposes of repairing his Kabonger. This is especially useful after using KABOOOOOONG!, completely fixing Mundane and Masterwork Kabongers as well as Magical Kabongers, although the magic is still lost just like any other destroyed magic item. It is used on a Magical Kabonger before it reaches its limit, the limit is reset. They can use Repair Kabonger 1/Day at 2nd level and 3/Day at 5th level.

Smart-Alec Sidekick (Ex): At 5th level, the Knight of Kabong gains a single follower as though they had taken the Leadership feat, but do not obtain any other benefits of the feat. The level of the sidekick is determined the same way the cohort’s level is determined under the rules of Leadership. This sidekick must be an NPC class, can only cross class into NPC or support classes such as Bard, and can't take prestige classes. He is often smarter than the Knight of Kabong (even if the Knight of Kabong is very intelligent), and, although loyal and devoted, tends to make sarcastic comments about his observations of the Knight of Kabong’s actions and behaviors. The sidekick is fully aware of the Knight of Kabong’s true identity and the Knight of Kabong doesn’t even bother to deny to to the sidekick since they follow them everywhere anyway. t of Kabong and will warn them, but the Knights of Kabong tend to ignore the warnings and advice of their Sidekick, prompting much of the sarcastic remarks, often directed to the other party members.

The epic Knight of Kabong gains a bonus feat (selected from the list of epic feats appropriate to their base class) every 3 levels after 5th.

Campaign Information[edit]

Most Knights of Kabong come up with a code name so that they do not have to use their real names and to avoid confusion if more than one Knight of Kabong lives in a certain area. For example, the halfling Knight of Kabong Yenwrick Davos goes by the code name Shortstack. Most Knights or Kabong are heroic, whether good or neutral. Evil Knights of Kabong are extremely rare, but those that do exist are a terror to behold.

Playing a Knight of Kabong[edit]

Combat:Knights of Kabong are extremely versatile and can take on any role in combat depending on what their base class is. They could be a front-line fighter, a support combatant, magic user, etc.

Advancement: Virtually anything.

Resources: It's not particularly common for two or more Knights of Kabong to encounter one another, but they gladly work together when they do, sharing new techniques for Kabonging and giving advice on what kinds of materials are best of their Kabongers.

Knights of Kabong in the World[edit]

I'm never without my Kabonger. Whether for playing music or Kabonging bad guys, it will save your life
—Yenwrick "Shortstack" Davos, Halfling Bard/Knight of Kabong

Knights of Kabong are extremely versatile and can be found in virtually all facets of the world

NPC Reactions: Knights of Kabong are heroes through and through. Even if one is new, the reputation of the Knights of Kabong in general is a great boon to them. NPCs have great respect for these mysterious heroes and cheer and celebrate one's arrival. The exception to this is if the NPCs in question have ever encountered an evil Knight of Kabong, they will treat all Knights of Kabong with fear and suspicion. Evil creatures are often fearful of a Knight of Kabong, having heard of their reputation and knowing that being hit by a Kabonger hurts.

Knight of Kabong Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Local) can research Knight of Kabong to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (Local)
DC Result
11 Knights of Kabong have a knack for appearing at just the right time. They seem to know when trouble is afoot
16 Their Kabongers are not particularly special. They are just regular instruments in the hands of a non-El Knight of Kabong.
21 The Regalia of Heroic Disguise grants them their powers, but wearing it is not necessary for them to use them
26 The legendary El Kabong, who the Knights of Kabong model themselves after, was an anthropomorphic horse.
