Philosopher's Fire[edit]

"The golden flame danced, perched upon a thin needle of silver which extended from a curious silver candleholder. One end protruded with a small round handle, and from the other, a slight pour spout, for from the flame slowly dripped a reddish-purple liquid, which collected slowly in the dish below. The light of the flame warmed the nearby air."

The Philosopher's Fire: A somewhat accidental creation in alchemical research, this flame had been created using a mixture of elemental spirit and applied, well researched alchemical knowledge.

The flame is used to produce false alkahest, a reddish-purple waxy liquid that dissolves easily in most solutions, tinging it with that color. This substance is used to transmute silver into alchemical silver. The process of treating silver in this way takes 1 hour per pound of silver to be reacted. The false alkahest can also be applied during forging with hot silver or mixed in directly with molten silver. It is unknown how much heat, pressure or cold is needed to change the state of false alkahest into a gas or solid.

The philosopher's fire produces enough false alkahest each day (when exposed to open air) to transmute 1 pound of silver into alchemical silver. This false alkahest, if left for 1 week, becomes despirited alkahest which may be used as a raw ingredient in alchemical processes. A day's worth of produced despirited alkahest is worth 5 gp in raw alchemical ingredients.

The flame, when not in active use, is often contained in a small enclosed container or submerged in a liquid, where it continues to burn and illuminate, but no longer produces the reddish-purple liquid false alkahest.

The flame illuminates as a torch, giving off a golden glow, and warms the surroundings appropriately as well.

Touching the flame directly deals 2d6 fire damage but also heals 2d6 with positive energy per round of sustained contact. Creatures resistant to fire are also resistant to this positive energy in the same amount.

Save for a bit of flickering, the philosopher's fire appears unaffected by wind or dousing.

Strong transmutation; CL 20th; Weight 1 lb, minor artifact cannot be crafted.
