Granting Templates[edit]

I'm somewhat concerned about giving people the ability to stack templates on creatures, but can't think of anything horrible off the top of my head. If someone remembers something I don't that would cause this to be a terrible plan, please let me know so I can sort something else. - Tarkisflux Talk 06:39, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Lolth-touched and Monster of Legend could be two possibilities, but the rationale that you could get something just as good or better by getting a creature with a higher CR probably holds true more often than not. - TG Cid 15:47, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
True enough, I'm just worried about CR drop out at higher levels. Since you start running out of options at higher levels, I'd prefer to include an option for bringing forward lower CR creatures instead of just increasing their numbers for their entourage. - Tarkisflux Talk 16:30, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
One minor thing I noticed is that at level 20, a character with full ranks can have a Half-Fiend T-Rex and have it auto-kill anything with 20 HD or less. Technically, that's one free CR 20 kill per day (assuming that you use it to kill an NPC). --Aarnott 20:03, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
I'm not seeing the auto-kill there (though a T-Rex with destruction and blasphemy amuses me), but it's probably moot since that template requires an Int of 4 or greater. Sigh. - Tarkisflux Talk 20:38, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
T-Rex = CR 8, Half-Fiend = +3 (CR 11), Advance HD by 12 +4 (CR 15). HD = 30 and you have a devil T-Rex that explodes people. But yeah, if the template restricts it, that's fine. --Aarnott 20:41, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Just to throw it out there[edit]

A titanic, monster of legend, small monstrous scorpion. Str 49, Dex 16, Con 40, Int -, Wis 12, Cha 6. Poison is 2d6 con @ DC 41 for sting attack and 1d6 con @DC 41 for bite attack. Add in a couple ability focus feats to get those DCs up to 44. If done correctly, this beastmaster feat can be almost as strong as leadership. --Aarnott 21:08, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Oh yeah, it's perma-hasted so the sting can happen twice. RAWR - take 5d6 con damage with a ridiculous DC :P. --Aarnott 21:10, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
Titanic (and Paragon as well, though you couldn't get it before level 21) have been patched out. This is why I asked above :-p - Tarkisflux Talk 21:21, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
It was monster of legend from MM2. That adds a ton of benefits with a +2 CR price tag. Chimeric is also a problem probably (2 extra attacks, ability score bonuses, +6 natural armor, hit dice = d10, some other stuff, all for +1 CR).
Another issue I noticed (which may not be a huge deal) is epic feats. My T-Rex could have its first epic feat when I reach level 15. It will get an epic feat every level I gain thereafter. --Aarnott 21:35, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
Monster of Legend is probably badly priced, but without calling it out as specifically not eligible I don't know to deal with it without also throwing out useful things. And I don't know that I want to throw it out specifically yet. I have similar feelings about Chimeric. The feat thing I had forgotten about in general, and I'm not sure what to do about it aside from cap HD at 20.
Which is piling up to make this already complicated thing even more complicated... not sure it's worth the continued headaches. May do something else for the ability there. Open to suggestions. - Tarkisflux Talk 21:58, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
