Not sure why people hate on this feat, since D&D is already replete with "add X mod to Y bonus" class features, racial abilities, items and feats. It's solidly rogue level, has a hard cap, and is useful for front line, support and rear caster types.

Boring number shifting. Feats should do more than this.
Rating this opposed and effectively asking for a removal seems pretty unjustified, as there are a lot of feats that are just boring number shifting. There is a lot of precedence for this sort of thing, even if you would prefer it otherwise. Please explain more or adjust your rating. - Tarkisflux Talk 05:01, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Why wouldn't a caster take it? It seems a bit overmuch. The special is a bit strange, and should probably be reworded for more precise effect. The overall concept is good, and this could be improved.
If you think the concept is good, you shouldn't dislike it :-P
That said, it's trading a whole feat (where a caster could just as easily be getting their Awesome Feat of Awesomeness like Extraordinary Concentration or Divine Metamagic) for almost the same bonus as if they had cast Shield, so it's not that big of a deal. Plus it doesn't stack with aforementioned spell or that +5 Mithril Buckler of +5 Defending that they'll be getting later, so if you think that it makes casters "OP" or somesuch, I think you're gravely mistaken. --Ghostwheel 02:55, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

A feat that basically replaces an animated shield is awesome. Flavor-wise, D&D can seem lame when everyone has a big metal shield floating nearby them. It allows lightly armored characters to have their shield bonus and also still seem kung-fu-like.

The "Special" text is a bit confusing in that normally other ability scores don't grant shield bonuses to AC. The text implies that it wouldn't stack with regular AC bonuses or armor AC bonuses from ability scores, which is a bit weird. A bit of clarification could go a long way, I think.

It often becomes a sort of must-have for SAD characters, especially caster types. I'm not sure I approve.

It strikes me as Very High, and kind of too good for characters that don't use shields. +5 or more AC where you were expecting none is RNG bending at level 1. It should scale with level to merit anything lower than Very High. Being equivalent to a +7 shield (+5 dancing heavy shield) is not appropriate for a level 1 feat. Alternative comparison of a 24 hour Shield spell gives a smaller bonus, and is also not appropriate for a level 1 feat outside of maybe a Very High game. It just feels dirty to have Very High feats that are aimed at making Very High caster classes even stronger.

Armored?

Maybe "shielded in life" would be a better name, to prevent confusion with the Monk's ability. Surgo 22:31, March 16, 2010 (UTC)
