3 Times the Resistance[edit]

I know this is a one-and-done thing for immediate energy resistance, but isn't x3 a bit good for a 1st level spell? At it's scaling, my gut says 2nd. That said it can work at 1st but I'd probably make it x2 scaling (or if you're concerned about low level, say it has a minimum resistance of 5 or something). Resist 60 at 20th seems a bit much for the low level. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 00:41, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

I am also unsure about this spell, but I think it may be a little too weak instead of too strong. The duration of the spell is only 1 round, which justifies pretty much any amount of energy resistance you may end up getting. Resisting 60 damage of one energy type for 1 round is nothing at level 20, and makes the level of this spell appropriate enough in my eyes. But at low levels, this spell is somewhat weaksauce. Its saving grace is that it can be cast as an immediate action, allowing you to give yourself resistance to an attack before it hits you, which is nice enough and can totally save your butt in the right situation. It's just that resist energy and its mass variant are incredibly useful spells, with excellent utility and a long duration. If I was a spellcaster, I would only consider preparing this at the early level if the party is small and my Constitution low. --Sulacu (talk) 08:39, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Eiji, I agree with Sulacu that it is probably on the weaker side of things. The original idea was a combat trick for games where enemies are using energy damage spells. It scales so that it basically (on average) prevents the bulk of a 1d6 damage per level energy spell. It's not spectacular, but it came about as a sort of "counterspell" idea I wanted to implement. Some ideas to improve its scaling:
  • Resist 5 per CL (this will pretty much stop any non-maximized energy spell)
  • 1 target per 4 CLs (or something like that). That way you can stop an AoE energy attack at higher levels.
  • Increased range based on CL
Some combination of these (maybe all) would probably make it a better spell. Thoughts? --Aarnott (talk) 13:19, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
I don't actually like the idea of a level 1 immediate slot blocking a 5th level maximized energy effect, so I'm going to suggest a fixed amount of resistance instead (like 20). It avoids the early game problems of sucking and the late game problems of still being extremely useful while also comparing somewhat favorably to the level 2 resist energy. If you need it to scale in some way, you could change the range to close or do the additional targets thing (1 per 2 levels, capped at 5). - Tarkisflux Talk 16:53, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
