A warlock that delves into darkness, or a shadowcaster who dabbles in the infernal. 10 6 Moderate Good Poor Good Alternate Magic, Invocations, Other Full

Umbral Warlock[edit]

To hide from me is pointless, for I am the darkness in which you hide.
—Narcissus Shayd, Drow Umbral Warlock, Shadows Of Things To Come

Umbral Warlocks are those who have seen into the beyond, studying the mysteries of the Shadow Plane, and seek to gain more power from this dark connection in the same method they used to heighten their inborn power - Through a pact.

Note: While this shares similarities to this, I didn’t find that until after I had already fleshed out a large deal of this PrC. So all due credit goes to the original author; I designed this and coincidentally use the same name to boot; I’m not stealing anyone’s work. The ideas that differentiate my work from Shhalahr Windrider’s are completely my own.

Becoming an Umbral Warlock[edit]

Umbral Warlocks study the ways the Shadow Plane interacts with other planes and with other creatures in order to gain knowledge about their own ever-growing shadow.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Umbral Warlock.

Shadowcasting/Invocations: At each level, you gain an increase in caster level (and mysteries and invocations known, if applicable; Including Eldritch Blast damage) as if you had also gained a level in both the Shadowcaster and Warlock classes to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one shadowcasting class or more than one invoking class before becoming an Umbral Warlock, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining caster level, Mysteries and Invocations known, Eldritch Blast damage and the like.

Eldritch Shadows (Su): At any Umbral Warlock level at which you can learn a new invocation or switch out a known invocation for a new one (Due to advancement of your invocations and etc., as above), the invocation chosen can instead be a Mystery of equivalent grade that you are eligible to learn. This Mystery is learned as an Invocation, useable at will as a spell-like ability. When learned in this manner, it still advances your progress in the Path as if you had learned it normally; You have just chosen to apply that new knowledge to your invocation energy. This doesn’t apply to your Fundamentals, and Mysteries learned in this manner never advance into Supernatural abilities. Finally, each level of Umbral Warlock stacks with your Shadowcaster levels for purposes of determining your Sustaining Shadows ability.

Dusk Familiar (Su): Upon taking your first level in this class, your familiar is replaced by a Duskwalker, which, unlike your Shadow Familiar, doesn’t gain the Dark template, as it is already a shadow creature. In addition to the normal familiar benefits, the Duskwalker’s Regeneration increases by 1 point every 4 HD, but gains no other benefits from advancing in HD.

Shadow Slip (Sp): At 2nd level, you learn the Shadow Slip invocation as a bonus invocation.

Sneak Attack (Ex): At 3rd level, you gain Sneak Attack, as the Rogue class feature. Your Sneak Attack damage increases by +1d6 at every Umbral Warlock level divisible by 3 (6th, 9th, etc.)

Dark Resilience (Su): At 4th level, you gain Regeneration 1 while in areas of darkness or shadowy illumination. Fire damage, damage from [Light] effects, and damage from Cold Iron physical attacks deal normal damage to you. This bypasses any immunity you may possess to nonlethal damage, and this regeneration doesn’t apply to you while in areas of bright illumination. This regeneration increases to Regeneration 2 at 7th level.

Damage Reduction (Ex): At 5th level, you gain Damage Reduction 1/Cold Iron, or your existing damage reduction vs. Cold Iron increases by 1 point. Your Damage Reduction increases by another point at 10th level.

Weave Shadows (Su): At 8th level, your mastery over darkness has increased. When you cast an invocation, you can add a similar Mystery to it by increasing the casting time to 1 round. The Mystery selected must have the same or greater range as the Invocation, and the same target/area. Furthermore, you can apply your Eldritch Blast to any harmful Mystery you cast, as a Blast Shape (So long as the Mystery’s casting time is 1 standard action or less). Doing so adds the Eldritch Blast’s damage to the effects of the Mystery, and increases the casting time to 1 round. So, for example, you could add your Eldritch Blast to a Dusk Arrow mystery as you cast it.

Dark Apotheosis (Su): At 10th level, you transform into a creature of darkness. Your type changes to Outsider, with the Native and Augmented (Whatever type you previously were) subtypes. Finally, you gain the Dark template (Tome Of Magic), with no Level Adjustment, and your Dark Resilience increases to Regeneration 3.
