Firenewt[edit]

Another race from Monsters of Faerun that I wanted to give a playable writeup, firenewts are reptilian monstrous humanoids with fire powers.

Personality[edit]

Firenewts live in tribes of around 80-100 individuals, ruled by a tribal overlord (usually the highest level character in the tribe). They are carnivores who will eat anything they hunt, although they prefer the taste of humanoids to others. Firenewts almost never use wooden weapons or tools because of the likelihood that their fire breath will cause them to combust, but their stone and metalworking techniques are second only to the dwarves. Their villages are made from hewn stone, and most firenewts are equipped with high quality metal weapons and armor. Firenewts are also talented at animal husbandry, and have been known to breed fire resistant mounts and livestock.

Physical Description[edit]

Firenewts resemble bipedal lizards with long tails. They look somewhat less humanoid than lizardfolk, their closest (but still distant) relatives. Their eye color ranges from deep crimson to inky black. Their skin ranges from mottled brown (reddish brown for males, duller brown for females) on their backs to near white on their bellies, and other than its dryness resembles an eel's in texture. They usually stand between 5 1/2 to 6 feet tall and weigh around 170 to 180 pounds, with females being smaller than males.

Relations[edit]

Firenewt tribes have a habit of going to war with not only other races, but also each other, and thus have rather poor relations with their own race as well as others. In fact, most firenewts go to war with other firenewt tribes more often than with other races. Firenewts from tribes that have been destroyed through tribal warfare often take up mercenary work, and many firenewt adventurers start their careers this way.

Alignment[edit]

Being very violent creatures, most firenewts tend towards neutral evil. However, firenewt tribes of other alignments exist, and even firenewts from evil tribes may leave their lives of cruelty behind to join less evil groups.

Lands[edit]

Firenewts prefer warm or hot climates, living mostly in volcanic regions, although some can also be found in deserts or warm mountains. Firenewt settlements in temperate areas are rare but not unheard of, but none have been found in cold areas.

Religion[edit]

Firenewts most commonly worship Kossuth, the true neutral greater deity of elemental fire and purification. Clerics of Kossuth are second only to tribal overlords in terms of how much authority they have over the average firenewt tribe.

Language[edit]

All firenewts speak Common and Draconic. Especially intelligent ones speak Ignan, and some even learn the languages of neighboring humanoids and other monstrous humanoid races.

Names[edit]

Racial Traits[edit]

  • +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma: Firenewts are agile and tough, but their arrogance makes them poor learners and hard to get along with.
  • Monstrous Humanoid (Fire, Reptilian): Despite having "newt" in their name, firenewts are essentially bipedal lizards.
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a firenewt has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Firenewt base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Darkvision: A firenewt can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and a firenewt can function just fine with no light at all.
  • Breath Weapon (Su): once every 1d4 rounds; 15' line; 1d6 points of fire damage per 2 HD (minimum 1d6); Reflex DC 10+ 1/2 HD +Con mod halves. At 5 HD the area of the breath weapon increases to a 30' line, at 10 HD it increases to 60', and at 15 HD it reaches the maximum of 120'.
  • Automatic Languages: Common and Draconic.
  • Bonus Languages: Celestial, Dwarven, Elven, Giant, Goblin, Ignan, Orc, Sahaugin, Thri-Kreen, Yuan-Ti.
