Spotted Hyena

A big scary cat, loves to laugh.

Physical Description

Spotted Hyenas are fierce doglike cats with spotted brown fur in a variety of patterns of colors, a sort of trapezoidal stance, and extremely powerful jaws.

Relations

Most Spotted Hyenas are content to live their lives as ordinary animals, ignorant of such concepts as class levels and godlike power. Those who do encounter such concepts, whether by being born with sorcerous powers or by discovering the art of sneak attacks, tend to be caught up in interactions with members of more civilized races who wish to use those powers for their own ends.

Alignment

Most Spotted Hyenas remain neutral, like all animals. The ones who gain immense power frequently drift from that path, however.

Lands

Spotted Hyenas prefer to live in warm regions.

Religion

Few Spotted Hyenas have been introduced to the concept of deities.

Language

Spotted Hyenas have a simple semi-language referred to here as Feline. They are not intelligent enough to understand any real languages by nonmagical means.

Names

Spotted Hyenas generally refer to one another by scent or title. Members of civilized races often choose to give them nicknames.

Racial Traits

• +2 Constitution, Equals 2 Intelligence: Spotted Hyenas are endurance predators.
• Animal: Spotted Hyenas are animals.
• Medium (Quadruped): Spotted Hyenas are medium quadrupeds, so they can carry 1 1/2 times as much as a regular medium creature with their Strength score.
• Spotted Hyena base land speed is 40 feet.
• Stupid: Spotted Hyenas are stupid animals with only a loose grasp of social interaction. Thus, they use Intelligence instead of Charisma for Diplomacy checks, and can never learn languages by any nonmagical (or nonpsionic, etc.) means.
• Powerful Jaws: The Spotted Hyena gets a 1d10 damage bite attack, which can be enchanted as though it were a weapon.
• Trip: A Spotted Hyena that hits with its bite attack can attempt to trip the opponent (+2 check modifier) as a free action without making a touch attack or provoking an attack of opportunity. If the attempt fails, the opponent cannot react to trip the Spotted Hyena.
• Bonus Feat: Spotted Hyenas get a bonus feat (they have to meet the prerequisites) to compensate for their many failings.
• Automatic Languages: Feline.
• Bonus Languages: None.
• Favored Class: Any. Spotted Hyenas who have managed to obtain one class level tend to favor that class. Their first class is always their favored class.
• Level Adjustment: +0
• Effective Character Level: 1
